OUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
At Manas Ghorai, how we design is also why we design.
When we set out to build Manas Ghorai, we knew that we had to make a choice.
The handloom industry in India sits at a crossroads that it has been sitting at for decades. On one side, the market is fast, scalable, willing to compromise on material and process in exchange for price and volume. On the other side, the craft is slow, limited, entirely dependent on the skill and time of artisans. You cannot stand in the middle of that crossroads indefinitely. Eventually you have to choose a side and walk toward it.
We walked toward the craft. Completely and without looking back.
SO WE ASKED
The important questions
Not just what does this look like?
What is this made of, and what does that mean?
Not who will buy this, but who made this, and under what conditions?
Not how do we grow but how do we make things that deserve to exist?
The answers to those questions became our design philosophy.
Handspun cotton because it is honest. Natural dye because the river matters. Limited production because the karigar's time is not infinite and neither is ours. Motifs drawn from Bengal's oldest weaving vocabulary the Machh buti, the water lily, the mango leaf, the honeycomb jaal because they have survived this long and they deserve to survive longer.
Design, at Manas Ghorai, is not merely decoration. It is not the finishing touch on something that was already decided. It is the reason everything is the way it is from the cotton in the ground to the saree in your hands. Every visible thing is the consequence of a decision made earlier, deeper, with more intention than the surface can show.
How we design is why we design. It was a choice we made at the beginning. It is the same choice we make every day.
