Mrittika Lata Yali Jamdani Saree

There is something of weathered earth in this colour.

Madder mixed with catechu creates the saree’s warm ground, scattered with light indigo butas. The pallu opens into a more elaborate composition of konya buta and a composite Yali: a lion’s body, a crocodile’s face and an elephant’s trunk, accompanied by curling creepers. Each change of line gives the creature its particular expression. Rendered through Bengal’s supplementary extra-weft technique, the composition carries the intricacy of architectural carving into a fluid, wearable textile.
